Glorious historical past, deep pedagogical and scientific traditions accumulated in almost two and a half centuries of development of the University, the importance and relevance of geodetic sciences and topographic and surveying production for many areas of knowledge and sectors of the economy, a wide range of areas in which training is held provided MSUGC a leading role as a specialized institution of higher professional education.

Currently, the University is a large educational, scientific and production complex, which includes six full-time faculties, the faculty of online study modes, the Center for Professional Advancement of University teachers and retraining of specialists, postgraduate and doctoral studies, specialized training laboratories in various areas of geodesy, cartography, cadastre, geographic information and remote sensing. The University structure comprises research and production centers "Geodynamics", "Geomonitoring", a comprehensive laboratory for the study of extraterrestrial territories, the Center for satellite technologies application in geodesy, Russian cartographic center, publishing magazine "Geodesy and aerial photography", three training platforms, computer centers, educational and geodetic museum and library. The University has two specialized colleges.
